My Vision Story

I was diagnosed in my early 20’s with Keratoconus. Keratoconus is a vision disorder that occurs when the normally round cornea (the front part of the eye) becomes thin and irregular (cone) shaped. This abnormal shape prevents the light entering the eye from being focused correctly on the retina and causes distortion of vision. In my case, I noticed that something was wrong during an eye exam when my vision couldn’t be corrected. “Is 1 better or 2?” the doctor asked, but everything looked blurry.

I lived with the condition until I was in my late 30’s. By that time, I had difficulty driving at night due to glare, and I could barely recognize people in passing. I tried rigid contact lenses and different eyeglass prescriptions, but nothing helped. I decided to have a cornea transplant in 2010. Here is my journey through that process.
